Myopia is one of the most common refractive errors around the world. However, what makes myopia such an important topic for optometrists isn’t just it’s prevalence; it’s also when it starts to develop.

Every age group is susceptible to myopia, and studies show that more people are expected to develop the condition in the future. If left to develop, myopia can cause eye strain and headaches. Myopia can also affect your ability to operate machines and tools safely.

Don’t let myopia dictate your vision. Book an appointment with our eye care team and let us help you find effective ways to manage your symptoms!

Myopia in a Nutshell

Myopia is developing in epidemic proportions. Currently, experts believe that nearly 40% of the US population has some degree of myopia, and as much as half of the entire world population will have some degree of myopia by 2050.

Myopia is a refractive error that affects your eye’s ability to see objects clearly at a distance, but not close up. It generally occurs when your eyes grow elongated as you age, forcing light that enters your eye to bend (refract) and focus in front of your retina instead of on it.

Myopia can also increase the chance of developing a range of different eye diseases and conditions, including glaucoma, myopic macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and cataracts.

Myopia is generally a condition that develops genetically from generation to generation. However, some experts believe that not spending enough time outdoors, too much screen time, and concentrating on near tasks can also increase the chances of developing myopia.

Myopia in Children

Myopia isn’t just common; it’s also highly prevalent in children. It starts developing during childhood, sometimes as young as 3 years old, and can progress until the age of 20 and beyond.

While experts don’t consider myopia to be a serious condition, it can affect how effectively children can learn in school and can put them at risk for a variety of different eye diseases and conditions, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, and even macular degeneration.

Please, take your child in for regular eye exams. Early detection of myopia can help your optometrist start a treatment plan to manage their symptoms.

Our Myopia Management Program

Each patient is different, which is why we offer a revolutionary myopia management program that can be customized to you!

By using special testing and periodically assessing the effectiveness of our therapeutic solutions, we can help you find the right program for the most effective control of myopia. We’ll spend the time to ensure our program is working correctly for you!

Some aspects of the program include:

Ortho-K (orthokeratology) is a gentle, non-surgical, and reversible solution that involves wearing specially designed contact lenses while you sleep. The optics of the contact lens are designed to reduce a condition called Hyperopic Defocus, which has been shown to contribute to the worsening of myopia in children.

Multifocal soft contact lenses may also help slow the progression of myopia. Multifocals use multiple prescriptions in the lens to help the wearer gradually see clearly from up close to a distance.

Multifocal lens optics can also be designed to reduce Hyperopic Defocus and reduce the worsening of myopia. The proper selection of lenses and the nature of the optics needed to produce the desired treatment is a very important ingredient to achieve success with this technique.

Atropine eye drops can also help slow the progression of myopia. Atropine eye drops are a prescription medication that requires approval from your optometrist. However, experts believe it can work for patients of all ages.

Proper prescribing and education on the use of this treatment are part of our myopia management program.
