Keratoconus and Irregular Corneal Astigmatism
Patients with irregular corneal astigmatism often have reduced vision that is not readily correctable with glasses or standard contact lenses. The condition causes distorted or streaky vision and may cause light sensitivity or even the perception of seeing multiple images, a phenomenon called polyopia. Irregular corneas can be the result of trauma, corneal transplants, complicated laser surgery such as LASIK or RK, or disease such as keratoconus.
Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory eye condition in which the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, becomes progressively thinner and more cone-shaped. Though it may be asymmetrical, keratoconus usually affects both eyes and first appears in the second or third decade of life. It may cause a progressive decline in visual acuity and in a small percentage of patients, may eventually require corneal transplantation.
Keratoconus and Irregular Cornea Treatment
Patients with irregular corneas or keratoconus require a detailed custom contact lens fitting in order to maintain good eye health and an adequate level of vision. Traditionally, patients with irregular corneas were limited to small diameter hard lenses that were uncomfortable and resulted in reduced wearing time, but our lens options range from soft, gas permeable, or hybrid contact lenses. Fitting these types of contact lenses is a specialty of Eye Care Center of Colorado Springs, and we often find a lens option that provides comfortable vision. Dr. Bro and Dr. Johnson continuously study the most current treatment innovations in custom lens designs for irregular corneas and keratoconus.
In our experience the end result of this highly individualized process is a rewarding feeling for the patient. It is common for patients to find that they can resume activities they thought were a thing of the past including tasks as common as driving to work! Individualized consultation with your eye care professional will determine the best treatment and lenses for irregular cornea or keratoconus. Specialty Contact Lenses for Keratoconus and Irregular Cornea
Kerasoft ® IC
We now offer a new lens for Keratoconus called the Kerasoft ® IC. Currently, we are the first and only provider in Southern Colorado to offer this new product for irregular corneas. This life changing lens is a complete system to enable healthy management of irregular corneas through a customizable soft contact lens. For those suffering from keratoconus or irregular corneas, the unique design of this lens provides comfortable wear and excellent vision all day, seven days a week. Each lens is custom-made for your exact need and provides many ocular health benefits. The Kerasoft ® IC lens allows most patients suffering with any type of irregular cornea to attain levels of comfort and vision they had not previously thought possible.
Scleral gas permeable lenses are an excellent option for highly irregular corneas caused by keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, and post surgical conditions such as RK, PRK, LASIK, & PKP. These lenses are custom-made to vault over the entire cornea, bathing the eye in a tear layer that fills in the spaces of the irregular corneal surface. This minimizes streaky or distorted vision and provides excellent vision with comfort that is superior to traditional small diameter gas permeable lenses.
Ask Dr. Bro or Dr. Johnson about scleral contact lenses for normal corneas or dry eye relief.
Synergeyes Hybrid Contact Lens
Synergeyes Hybrid lenses feature a rigid gas permeable lens with a flexible soft skirt that rests on the eye. This lens provides the crisp vision of a rigid contact lens with the comfort of a soft lens. Synergeyes lenses offer consistent clarity of vision for patients with high levels of astigmatism, irregular corneal astigmatism, and keratoconus.
