Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory condition in which the clear dome of the eye called the cornea thins and becomes cone-shaped.
It usually affects both eyes and first appears in the second or third decades of life. Keratoconus may cause a progressive decrease in visual ability which leads to corneal transplant surgery in a small percentage of cases. Patients with Keratoconus require the fitting of special contact lenses in order to maintain good eye health and optimal vision.
